Welcome to one of the oldest Model Railroad clubs in the USA. Founded in Murray Hill, NJ by inventor and NMRA Master Modeler (#4) Paul Mallery and three other gentlemen in 1949, we subsequently moved to our present site in 1974 and are now part of the Lenape Park grounds located in Union County, Union, NJ. Paul was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 1978 for his contributions to the hobby and the President's Award in 1980 for outstanding service to the NMRA.
|
On Feb. 8, 2005, the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders recognized the contributions Paul made to both his country and to the hobby and unanimously authorized the official naming of the Club building as The A.Paul Mallery Model Railroad Center. More information is available here in the Club press release. |
We are open to the public on Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm. There is an admission fee, on regular Saturdays of $5.00 per adult ($4.00 Seniors) and $3.00 per child. For three weekends each Fall our Club holds its Annual Show. Annual Show weekend admission is a bit higher with tickets for the 2008 event available here. Visit our Directions Page to view directions and a map to, or an aerial picture of, our Club. All admissions paid by the public, as well as member dues are used to maintain and expand the Club building and facilities. The rolling stock (railroad cars and locomotives) are funded solely by Club members. For information on our layouts visit our HO, N-Scale and Garden Railroad department pages.
| The Workshops
Page provides information about the model railroading classes that we
periodically provide - including a set recently offered. Classes
are forming now so don't wait to register for the latest set. If you can't wait for a class, we hope you enjoy the latest education addition to the website, the Learn With Us section which can now be found in the menu at the left edge of your screen . Keep coming back as we add new "lessons" to the section. We hope you'll like what you find there already. We think of it as just another way of sharing what we do, and how we do it, with you. |

Near the end of year 2000, after seven years of building our addition, we started benchwork. On February 19, 2001, we raised the first pieces of benchwork lumber. Check the Photo Gallery for pictures of the HO benchwork. We will be adding photos about our rail laying tasks semi-regularly. The photos of the wall removal are now available. Follow the links for these photos below. We completed a significant portion of the rough benchwork by the end of 2001.
In early October 2001 we received a temporary (12 month) Certificate of Occupancy for the addition. This allowed the general public to use the balcony area, upper level rest rooms, and the exits in the addition during the 2001 Annual show. All benchwork was completed in 2002 and work now continues to progress on the sub-roadbed and rail. Keep checking this site for more photos as the work continues here at The Model Railroad Club as rail continues to be laid, and laid and ....
And oh yeah, some scale size buildings are going up on the layout as well.
As of August 3, 2002 the wall separating the existing and new HO layout areas was removed, making for a grand vista extending the entire 128' in length. On September 18, 2002 we successfully passed the final inspection for our permanent Certificate of Occupancy. Following that, we invited the County Freeholders down to give them the key to the building. A photo of that event is here. Come down and see what we've been working on for all these years. The weather is great here. A constant 70 degrees, with lots of warm and friendly faces around. All we're missing is your face. Stop down and share it with us.
